Selecting the right COM port with USB cables
For your USB OBD or OBDII cable to work properly you must first select the right COM port in your Diagnostcis software so that the PC knows which port to talk to.
It assumes you have already installed the cable using the USB drivers provided. If you have Vista then you would have installed the cable using automatic settings.
Here are the steps:
1. Go to the device manager. In XP this is at start->control panel->system->hardware->device manager.
2. Open up the information tree marked 'Ports (COM and LPT)'.
3. Plug the cable in to any USB port.
4. You will see an entry appear under the 'Ports (COM and LPT)' heading labelled something like 'USB Serial Port (COM#)'. Take a note of the COM number, you will need to enter this into your diagnostics software settings.
5. Now you may close the device manager and open Datascan or NDSII.
6. Go to settings->communication, and where it says 'COM port' enter the COM number you found in the device manager for your cable. |
